Like everyone who has devoted much thought on traveling, you would understand that it is not cheap. However, this reality only adds a layer to the satisfaction that you would feel once you get to your destination.

Ready

Goal
Wishing and wanting are two very different things. Where lies the difference? In planning to get it of course. Direct your mind to imagine that martini in your hands as you watch sunset off the coast of Bali, or that cruise you are going to take island hopping between the Greek islands or the weight of that bag behind your back as you climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Plan
Then get into the details of your trip. Scout for airfare prices, hotel prices, meal prices, tours available, tour packages you can join to narrow down communication and planning time and work on the figure you will come up with. Break down this figure and plan it against a realistic timeline. At the end of this process, identify an amount you need to save on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

There are people who (for sanity sake!) plan to travel a minimum of once a year. Some plan to travel once locally and one time outside the country. This then gives you an idea how much time you have till your next "due".

Monitor
Meet your goals and try to adjust them as you go along. Save more if you can or get yourself closer to a more realistic amount or timeline.

Set

Travel Fund Bank Account

It sounds petty but this very effort of segregating an amount to an account solely related to travel may just do the trick. It requires discipline and at the same time provides motivation when you see the funds building up. I know of some people whose plans get grander the more they realize that they are able to accumulate funds because of a goal.

Relying on a bonus or wind fall simply does not make the cut for me. The regularity of the exercise will bring more pay-off in the long run, for travel or other things.

Go!

No. Not yet to your destination. Our goal here is to create a fund. My dad always tells us that when you have the money only then will you be able to think clearly. Let us set aside the holiday first and focus on the process of accumulating.

Where will you get the funds for travel? Aside from your salary, it is likely that you would have to make sacrifices along the way. Yes, sacrifices. A little here and a little there until it no longer hurts.

Some ideas:

Set aside another day (aside from color coding) when you will spare the car. Car pool or commute to work.

If you are in a desk job that does not require you to be in constant communication outside your family, dump your phone plans and stick to a prepaid sim . This way you can control when possible and not over burden your pocket with unnecessary charges.

Control your social dinners. Invite more people to each luncheon/ dinner. More fun, less cost.

Leave your credit cards at home. Everything seems less expensive when they can be enrolled in an installment plan. :) However, the instantaneous availability of funds with your card prevents you to think of the necessity of the item. Think how much more useful your PhP1,000.00 bill in SM as in the streets of Ho Chi Minh in your next travel? Will that PhP888.00 24-month installment for a new (yet again!) mobile phone equal to the fun you'll experience white water rafting in Chico river or CDO? Focus! Focus!

Do a general cleaning and team up with your travel buddies to regularly rid your room of clutter by setting up a garage sale once in a while. It bring you together as you build up funds for your next get away.

Next time you get together with friends, rent a movie and order take-outs (or pot luck) instead of hanging out in restaurants.

Stop smoking... and excessive alcohol . 'Nuff said about that.

I am sure you are more creative and can think of even more stuff than what is written here. DO NOT think that this post is inviting you to live for travel (although, get real. You already do, just not planned out like this).

There are of course other things you spend for. Write them down. Evaluate them. Cut out unnecessary items and place an amount to the necessities. This review will help you arrive at a comfortable amount , however big or small that you could discipline to put entirely to the travel fund as soon as you get your pay check.

Again, saving up for a travel fund only adds a layer to the experience of travel. You are more likely to be thoughtful before, during and after your travel when you prepare for your trips this way.

Regards,

For most, getting a visa is the single most STRESSFUL part of traveling. Moreso, as a Filipino, I am required to get a visa in most destinations. But really, there is no use sweating it. Its just gonna be one of those things you put off but need to deal with anyway.

So why not make yourself VISA-READY instead?

Most requirements in any embassy is simply there to establish your identity, financial capability to sustain your holiday and assurance that you will come back. Although there are no guarantees, it does not hurt to be equipped with these documents for whatever reason.

A. Identity.

1. PASSPORT. In most cases, your passport is enough to establish your identity as applying for one already has their safeguard. Hence, it is wise to always keep your passport in a safe place so as to keep its integrity (it does not look tampered because of juice/ coffee marks or torn pages) and accessibility. It is also wise to remember that passports are only valid up to six months before its expiry date. It is therefore recommended to renew your passport at least a year before expiry. OLD PASSPORTS are also good sources of information. They tell the consul where you have been, what other countries you have been granted visa to and if you have used them correctly. Do not make the mistake of throwing old passports away just because they are no longer valid.

2. I.D. picture. Of all requirements, this you can do last minute because they should be "recent". Be mindful of size, background, and special requirements which are mostly stated in application forms anyway.

3. Application forms. Most application forms for embassies can be downloaded from embassy websites.

4. NBI Clearance. So far, Chinese embassy is the only embassy I know that still requires this. They only require it from first time applicants only. You can now apply for your NBI clearance online.However, it only gives you a form that you will present, pay and complete in an NBI center. Click here for a list of NBI centers. Having a ready NBI for travel purpose may come in handy one day, who knows?

5. Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate. NSO copy of Birth Certificates and Marriage Certificates can be requested here. This is a must have anyway, so do order 2-3 copies for emergency use.

B. Financial Capabilities.

1. Bank Records. Passbooks, bank certificates, certificate of time deposit, 3-6 months latest bank statements, credit card billings, and of course, a good record/standing in all of these forms. It is prudent to keep a record of these for easy access when needed.

2. Business Records. DTI, SEC, Business permits and tax forms are also required especially from businessmen.

3. Be kind to your boss and HR department. :) Although they may have the obligation to give you a certificate (or a leave should you have credits) it is always "easier" and "faster" when you have good relations with them. Proof of income, employment certificate, proof of leave of absence are just some of the things you would need from their end. It is also important to note that you only get a good name from your HR department if they see that you use your leave wisely and that your applications are way ahead displaying foresight and time management on your part. More importantly, keep yourself employed (or with OCCUPATION). There are countries with no work, no visa policy. You should either be a student, employed or engaged in business. If you are waiting to resign from your job to finally have the time to visit Europe, you might have to make advance planning or you may end up stuck at home :).

4. Properties. Although this is always a requirement, it is not as vital as bank records.

C. Reason to come back.

This is the most subjective of all requirement check in embassies. All the other documents are just support to this. However, your success in proving this is key. Assuring the consul that you will return to your home country could be due to your work, business or relations. They may also ask you of your day to day itinerary in your destination so as to assure you only stay as needed and that your trip is well planned. If you are joining group packages, this will already be taken cared of.

These are just some of the things that you may want to keep in mind to keep yourself Visa-ready at anytime. Although you may not be 100% ready all the time, you are more likely to be ready if you are aware of them.

Regards,
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Like you, I am a holder of various life insurance policies that makes me feel very secure in terms of the things and people I will leave behind if something unfortunate happens to me. Thus, I have always been obstinate in terms of getting travel insurances thinking that it will only be redundant to what I already have.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I was wrong. Traveling has its own peculiar needs that may require from you more than what your usual life insurance/ accident insurance can give.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Travel insurance is a product tailor-fitted to the needs of a traveler ...like you. It does not only take care of expenses on your life or health. It may also take care of concerns on your documents, flight delays, etc. Things that are unique to people on the go.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Xperience Travel Services uses BLUE CROSS INSURANCE INC. for our client's travel insurance needs.

My companions at the hidden lagoon

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">I was fooled. I thought Leonardo di Caprio's movie the Beach was really about Phuket, but no. It was closer to home. Although the movie was set in Phuket, the author's inspiration was actually in that quaint little corner of our archipelago where he lived for six months : El Nido

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">This popular book by Alex Garland (and movie) The Beach (pertaining to that secluded lagoon of a beach called the Secret Beach in tour C) tickled the interest of tourists all over the world. El Nido is the only place in the Philippines where Filipino tourists are outnumbered by sun-hungry European tourists.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">At least that is how i observed it. I was only one of three Filipinos in our tour boat of 10 people. This rarely happens to me in my local holidays.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">This is a pleasant surprise as it is not easy to get to El Nido. A popular route is via Puerto Prinsesa.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">A six-hour van/bus ride (two hours of which is on rough road - hopefully not for long) from the capital of Palawan leads you to a once sleepy town of El Nido. Even now, there are no ATMs in the town so it would be best to bring cash along with you. It is also handy to remember that there is a rotational power outage in the island (power rationing). So lights are off from 6a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday, similar to Coron, Palawan.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large; text-align: justify;">El Nido is comprised of 45 islets with secret <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large; text-align: justify;">lagoons, secret beach, snorkeling and diving sites surrounded <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">by limestone formations similar to that of Halong Bay in <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Vietnam or Guilin in China. The best part is that water is warm enough for a swim all year round. Before tourism became the main source of livelihood in El Nido, fishing and collecting Nido (birds nest tucked in crevices of the limestone cliffs) was their main source of income.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Upon entering the town you would know for certain that paradise awaits. There is a different hum in the air and a sudden feeling of the old town and nostalgia envelopes you. I arrived in <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">the evening (with a fever to boot) so I skipped the night stroll at the beach to hit my bed so I could rise up early for my island tour the next day. Besides, the ocean view was pitch black.

Love at first sight

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">What a surprise welcomed me in the morning! The view of the limestone cliff that secures the beach cove of El Nido town was serenely waiting for me to arise. The fresh air and the whisper of the water on shore was enough to invite me to get up and start walking. As if everyone else has partied all night, i found myself alone in the beach and soon enough i finished the short strip of shore lined with hotels, hostels and inns for those who would like to be right at the beach.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">However, there are no big hotels in town, which is a big relief. Even the hotels and inns by the roadside and inwards are relatively small and simply kept. Surely, this is a deliberate effort to keep this small town unruffled by the influx of tourists.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">In El Nido, tours to the islands are standardized (Tours A-D) and are offered by all operators at the same price. On top of these tour fees, a one time PhP200.00 Environmental fee is levied on all tourists, a pass good for three days.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Tours in Palawan (PPS and El Nido especially) generally are organized and there is no need to haggle as everything is uniform. However during peak season, there is a need to make advance reservations.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">I myself have been to Bangkok three times already and each time, it always leaves me longing for more. It should be considered too that I have had the best friends to accompany me there... it must play a big part to my amazement to this neighboring country. But there is more to it than that.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">For one, Bangkok IS a shopping haven. A testament to that are the big scales at the foot of our elevator door at the hotel. Add to that the big black bags that simply screams " I found the best price...and you have not!" I am not a shopping enthusiast and rely on my friends (and my friendliness) to get me things as gifts. Otherwise, I will not move a finger to find and shop for what is more than the necessary ...by that I mean FOOD.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace; font-size: large;">The next reason i find Bangkok alluring is because of the strong presence of ancient religious practices in the heart of the city. Even in Beijing, I did not find big Buddhas in front of their shopping malls. Nowadays, in front of the Central World , the largest lifestyle destination in Bangkok, shrine for the 4 faced Buddha and Ganesha are prominent with worshipers down on their knees carrying incense and yellow flowers. <b style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">Culture and Religion is thickly embossed in the air.

<span style="clear: right; float: right; font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Third, like in Cambodia and Yogyakarta ruins of ancient temples and Big Buddha structures can also be found here...minus the long walk and steep climbs. That in itself is a big plus for me.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Some of the more common tours in Bangkok are the Grand Palace, Wat PO, Elephant show, crocodile show, floating market and rose garden.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">My personal favorite is the Siam Niramit show (not so much the dinner). I am envious of the number of tourists they get simply because they have preserved the old as they move to the new.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Not many Thai people know how to speak English, especially if you go to the outskirts of town. For me I find it a good thing. It is an indication of how much of the foreign influence they let in to their culture. Because of this "safeguard" (language) I know that Bangkok and its neighboring town can continue to preserve tradition and nature.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

I rode the elephant twice in each of my previous visit but this one was special. We went bathing with the elephants. We went three hours out of town for a 30 minute session with these gentle playful creatures. If you are traveling as a group in Bangkok, I could help you find this place.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">We started by riding the elephants bare back, yup, my skin against theirs. Then we moved to a rather steep downhill walk (remember I am on top of the elephant) to the river. Once at the river, the play starts - splashing and dunking and getting wet and wild. Although I would have to say it is not for everybody...for those who can let loose and play this is surely one stop you should try.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Bangkok is a destination that offers endless activities. As mentioned in the beginning, I always leave wanting to come back. Next time I'l go back for the tigers...teehee... :)

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Phuket is now synonymous to the movie "The Beach". But did you know that they also have the "James Bond Island"?

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">The Island got its name from the famed movie sequel when they used the island as location of 1974 Bond Film " The Man with the Golden Gun". Surrounded by Mangrove forests and nearby scenic islands, this is one of the many popular tours visitors from all over the world frequent in Phuket.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">The Phi Phi Island's name, another amazing island this part of the globe, refer to the mangrove wood found there. The island is entirely limestone and steep cliffs rising from the sea very nearly ring it. Surrounding waters average about 20 meters in depth, reaching 34 meters at the deepest point off the island's southern tip.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The Phi Phi island is by far the most famous island destination in Phuket. For some, this island may even be the only reason to visit this part of Thailand.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Surrounded by the sea, south sea pearls are also abundant in Phuket. The best place / tour to take to see these sea superstars is through the Koh Rang Yai island tour. Here, you can visit a pearl farm and see demonstrations of how pearls grow and pearl products are even sold. Koh Rang Yai is a beautiful island located on the east coast of Phuket and is only about 15 minutes from the the coast via speed boat.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The Khao Sok Jungle safari is another tour that should not be missed. This virgin rainforest dotted by limestome mountain ranges and rugged high cliffs was established as a national park in 1980. The tour takes you to a canoe ride along limestone mountains covered in jungle vegetation along the banks of the river. Then transfer to a Land Rover, take a short trek to a water fall.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Or how about an elephant jungle trek to Bang Pae waterfall?
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">There are simply endless things to discover.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">However, if all you need is a lazy stroll and sun bathing along the beach, Phuket boasts of many beaches to do just that. Most famous among them is the Patong beach.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

Of all the islands in the Philippines, Boracay island is probably the county's official island destination. Boracay has been featured in many MOST and BEST lists in international magazines and lifestyle and leisure surveys. Because of its powdery white sand beaches and surrounding islands and marine life, Boracay is sure to capture the heart of any island life lover.

When I set foot on the shores of Boracay, the first thing that came to mind was freedom. The unobstructed view of the sea, the wide expanse of space all white, blue , emerald green and all those colors that is refreshing to the eye suddenly makes it very clear that you are in paradise. Suddenly your mind is clear, your heart calm and all the worries of a place far from there is erased...at least for the mean time.

In Boracay the beauty of the surroundings does not keep you from the basic comforts of home. To some who can shell out a bit more, Boracay is home to some of the most luxurious hotels and properties. I would have to say that I hope they endeavor to make all these developments sustainable so as to maintain the beauty that brought people to Boracay in the first place.

Nowadays, people do not only go to Boracay to lie down on the beach. Tourists flock to Boracay for the many activities, hotels, parties, pastries that makes people come back for more.

Among the activities in the island are parasailing, Helmet dive, island hopping, banana boat, ATV ride, jetski, fly fish, glass bottom boat rides, sunset sailing, zorb, go cart, horse back riding.

D Mall and the D Talipapa as well as the many vendors along the beach is sure to delight shoppers.And for the foodies Kalamansi muffin and milky fruit shakes. Boracay also has the most happening parties along the beach sponsored by different organizations or hotels. Lets just say that Boracay knows how to make you happy.

A witness to all these frenzy is the quiet beauty of its sunset, the calm waters that whispers their hello and gently touches your feet as you stroll along the shores. For every visitor, that one last look at the simple and silent beauty of this place encourages you to make a promise to be back.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">I call this part of the Philippines, the other Palawan. Although there are no iconic landmarks or UNESCO recognized sites, there are considerably better places to visit here for water lovers.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">For one, the bodies of water here are not confined to the sea. Coron has hot spings, lakes, lagoon and the ocean in the most parts. Like in Puerto Princesa, the people of Coron has succeeded in doing their part in Palawan's quest to be the Philippines' last frontier.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">I especially loved the Twin Lagoon. To reach the Twin Lagoon, you have to SWIM UNDER A MOUNTAIN! It is not exactly that but I like telling it that way to make it more exciting. Well, on with the story. The lagoon is enveloped by limestone "mountains" and you have to swim below a gap to enter the lagoon. At the point where the salt water meets the fresh water of the lagoon, you can actually feel that warm,cold, lukewarm feel of the confluence of the two bodies of water.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Although it is not a snorkeling site, the fresh clean water is welcome respite to my skin burning with the salt and sun of our whole day of island hopping.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Another place to see is the Kayangan Lake. To get to the Lake, you would have to make a short trek of about 15 minutes. Do not fear the climb. Actually, because of the uneven steps of the rustic stairs through the trek, it is easier to go up than down. Half way through your trek is a "picture nook" over looking the most photographed part of Coron. In days where there are a lot of tourists, you might even have to line up to have your picture taken here.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">Upon reaching the top and a short descend, you could finally dip into the cold, refreshing waters of Kayangan. But no, this is not the thing to go for in Kayangan. If you have your underwater camera, they you are in luck. The lake is very deep and the view below is spectacular! Surrounded by limestones and big rock formations below, it is often described as "like a moonscape" scene. I personally felt overwhelmed by the cave like formations below....plus the clear indication that the lake is indeed very deep. But as you swim through several more times, you are left only with awe and (as for me) a deep regret I do not have an underwater camera with me.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The most famous (and nearest to the town) snorkeling site is the Siete Pecados Marine Park. It is surrounded by 7 small islands thus the name. Being a protected area, the underwater is simply divine. Even if you do not dive or snorkel, you are sure to spot fishes to you heart's content in this place. They are simply all over the place!
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Located near the Siete Pecados is the Maquinit hot spring. Salt water hot spring? What else do you need to prove it is good for your body? :)
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Shipwreck areas for snorkeling, the Barracuda Lake, Japanese shipwreck, coral garden (where we almost swam with a sea turtle) the Malcapuya island and many more.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">There are many more places to see (safari like you mean? ) and explore in Coron. Make sure you have enough days so as to allow you to take it slow and restfully go from one wonderful place to the next.

Puerto Princesa is famous for the longest underground system accessible to man - the Puerto Princesa Underground River. It has been hailed as one of the 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011 due to its size, biodiversity, and unique rock formations. Due to the zealous protection of the government of Puerto Princesa which has managed the underground river since 1992, this gem of nature is preserved and continues to be taken cared of for the next generation.
It is also the gateway to some of Palawan's most beautiful white sand beaches and dive sites in the country. The Honda Bay area is a staple in any traveler's itinerary in Puerto Princesa. With its rich marine life, sand bars and beautiful beaches, it should not be missed. Around this region of the Puerto Princesa Sea is the Dos Palmas Resort.

Nowadays, the towns of Taytay, Narra and El Nido are slowly creeping into the consciousness of our local and international tourists. Although some of them may be 3 to 6 hours away from Puerto Princesa, the Puerto Princesa Internationa Airport remains to be the only airport for commercial planes near these attractions.
This of course comes with a hefty price tag. For those who can afford, definitely worth it.

The turtle sanctuary of Arena Island Resort in Narra is 3 hours away from the town proper and offers luxurious accommodation for those who wish to have some peace and quiet.

The choice of resorts is not limited to the affluent. A wide selection of budget friendly resorts and hotels are in the city of Puerto Princesa and in El Nido and nearby towns.

You who travel the world and is in every hip and happening destination, we rely on you heavily to do your part to the preservation of Mother Nature's resources.

Green travel, eco-tourism, responsible travel, let not all these be a byword disrespected and ignored. We enjoy the beauty of our surroundings and we should play a part in keeping it that way.

In the Philippines, the harsh reality of tourism is a blessing and a curse. We all want that beach front hotel or that new flight route or to get a close encounter of our endangered animals. Though we may not be able to reverse these on our own, we could try to lessen their effects.

Here are some things you can do.
Reference: Sarah Schlichter as quoted in nbcnews.com

1. Save on water (reasonable use) , close the lights, air-conditioning, and other gadgets when you are not in the room.
2. Reuse your sheets and towels instead of having them replaced after every use.
3. If you do not use the hotel's toiletries, bring it with you and use it at home or in other parts of your travel.
4. Should your hotel support eco-friendly practices, participate in them and commend them for these.
5. Use the bus, train, shared vehicles in traveling to places within a country if time allows. Traveling across Europe is equally efficient via the railway system, for example.
6. While traveling within the city, use the bike, or hail a cab instead of rent-a-car.
7. When hiking, stay on marked trails, keep you trash or even, pick up trash along the way so as to bring it down with you when you leave.
8. When snorkeling, do not touch the corals or stir up sediments that disturb the reef's fragile ecosystem. When viewing and endangered species, be careful not to touch or disturb. Looking and observing their natural behavior may actually give you more to remember and discover.
9. Buy, use, eat locally produced products. You support the local economy and reduce the need for "flown-in" supplies and goods that in itself have had their own carbon print.
10. Talk to people, know their language, culture, respect their beliefs, wardrobe, way of life. People are part of that ecosystem and the less we change them, the more we preserve what is beautiful in our differences.

Resolving to travel "green" does not only do good to the environment or to the communities we visit. It also enhances our travel experience. It allows us to be one with the places and the people, their fragile nature and their unique cultures.

I would assume that you have thought about this holiday thoroughly and your activities are exactly how you like them. Not to mention you have the best buddies along with you.

Having said that then I have a few more tips to help you enjoy your holiday.

1. Smile and get ready to be surprised!

I find it amusing that those who expect great things to happen in their trip actually get them. While those who have expressed many many concerns even before they set foot in their destination either worried unnecessarily or got exactly what they worried about.

You are on a holiday, in a place unknown to you. Everything is new and is potentially an experience: good or bad. Savor it, enjoy and welcome what you would learn.

Although ample preparation may be in the works before you go on board, let go once you start with your holiday. Isn't that the essence of your vacation?

2. Talk to people.

Sometimes you find yourself in a group tour. Sometimes you encounter locals in the grocery store. Talk to them. Say hello.

I once went to a two day trip in Saigon and spent the first day talking to the people I am already with. During lunch time when the group settled in a restaurant, I saw groups of people who at the start of the trip were strangers to each other having a lively conversation and sharing trivia about their other travels.

The next day, I resolved to sit apart from my own group and sat down beside someone unknown to me. I have gained a friend, shared my stories and gained much more of hers. I learned that she was from Canada, that after graduation she has spent all her graduation gift traveling across Europe and now that she is working, celebrated her 2nd year of work with a month long holiday across Asia. I felt like I have opened a book and was whisked away to holidays I may take years to fulfill.

In another occasion, I was with a group in Coron, Palawan talking about the places I have in my bucket list. The night ended with 20 more locations added to that list and 6 more friends to boot.

They say the best guides in our destinations are locals who are happy about their place. Who would tell you its secrets, scandals, history, events, people and many more. No travel book can give you a more accurate picture.

3. Drop it.

Drop your iPad, Android, games, books, emails and anything that would keep you away from what is in front of you.

Be PRESENT. Notice the little things. The sound of the native dialect. The past time of people in the streets, the things on sale, the smell of the stores, the general mood of the place, the wardrobe, the school uniforms, the reaction of people, the humidity, the color of the place, anything that is outside YOUR ORDINARY.

Not to mention be mindful of instructions, meeting places, schedule and reminders from your guide is any :)

It is easy to enjoy your holiday when you go out there with an open mind and willingness to discover and learn.

It has got to be the most photogenic place I have ever been to. I put out my camera, click and there it is, a masterpiece. Of course that is for me to say and you to filter.

Batanes has always been a dream destination for me. For business, I did not feel the need or at least the urgency to offer packages in Batanes. For many reasons. There is the weather. Then the cost. Ultimately, is it going to be worth considering?

Climate change helped a little. Cost could now be adjusted (land arrangements). Is it worth considering? MOST DEFINITELY.

Even with the other two factors unsolved, I'd have to add.

Batanes has been preserved and untouched mainly because of the typhoons that beset this land for many years. However, during the summer months, tourists can take full advantage. Then there is that little summer in September as well that may give you a fighting chance towards the end of the year.

For our group, the airfare (being stable costed) also was an advatage. You can book your tour very close to the date, to see weather forecast first, and then make the arrangements. The airfare will not be any different.

However, I cannot force anyone to come. Batanes has quietly gone under my radar too for a long time. Until I made time and budget for it. And it did not disappoint. It is a quiet maiden waiting to be valued and visited. Once you do, it will cuddle you like a mother showing you how wonderful life and love and beauty is. That is how our trip went.

The Ivatan people are the most friendly and for lack of a better word "payak" people I have encountered. The moment we entered the airport, the locals have been smiling at us, no screening here. Just a warm welcome that makes you feel immediately at home.
The dainty facade and structure of the airport also helped a lot. Instead of a conveyor belt, or at least a table, we were escorted out of the reception and waited outside till we were called to get our bags. Our guide and inn keeper also welcomed us and gave us the ride to our accommodation. Once in our inn, we were served hot breakfast of rice and terriyaki-ed flying fish ( which they have a lot in this region) along with coffee and orange juice. Our veranda also immediately invited me to journal away as I am gently kissed by the cool wind that is not punitive but refreshing.

Our tour started after lunch. It is easy to find out how they love their Adobo here. Their cuisine is sweet. My friends asked several of the places we ate in for chili and they had none to offer. For our first lunch we were also served with Nilagang baka. The beef was so tender it melts in your mouth. Our host immediately bragged that everything in Batanes is organic. Livestocks are left to wander and "tend" the grasses around. Which also explains the picturesque landscapes of their hills. Everything is natural.

The usual Northern tour takes you to the Pag-asa weather station, the Fundacion Pacita, the boulder beach the rolling hills and the Basco lighthouse. All a beauty. One experience I could not forget is how we almost could not get out of the van while we were at the rolling hills due to the strong winds. We needed to hide behind a hill to stabilize the van. I don't think I have ever been in that situation with the sun up! We ended our tour at about 5ish with the sunset view by the lighthouse.

Our dinner was catered at the Inn but it was not to come until about 7:30p.m. So we wandered about the "town". Even at about 6p.m. the town is already "empty". You can number the people roaming around with your fingers. No lines tricycle and jeepneys to obstruct the view of the plaza. It is like the town was made just for us to roam around at that specific time. That is how peaceful Basco is. And this is THE town. We lived within a minute from the Municipal hall, hospital, Cathedral and a college. Yet, there was no crowd. Just peace.

On our second day, we went for the Sabtang tour. This requires us to travel 30 minutes by land, another 30 minutes by boat. Our boat was late in coming so we borrowed a local's bike (just like that!) and went around to see people in their houses and gardens. Everyone greets you with a smile (can't say enough of this). I also noticed they do not have public markets. Mang Conrado (from Ivana) told me they till the land. They take care of their own livestock. They share their land so they take turn in the their produce. Everything is given by nature. No one lacks food.

In Sabtang island, we visited Bo. Savidug and Idyang, Chavayan beach and Ahaw arc. In a sudden twist of events, we needed to stay in Sabtang for the night. A blessing in disguise. We had time to chat with locals, be cooked for by locals and be made pasalubongs for especially by locals. Conversations you do not hear elsewhere like " oo naman po, binigay ko lang ang manok ko kasi pag sya naman ang me huling isda binibigyan nya din kami. ganyan dito bigayan lang." Amen.

The highlight of our trip was the morning after. We rented a smaller boat than the one that usually traverse this channel so that we could catch up with our schedule on the other side. Since the regular boatman need to stay in town till after the 8:00 mass, the next boat out of Sabang was at 10ish ( no definite time here) . They call the sea "swallow waters" around this part. For me, it was swallow in two ways. It swells, and it looks like its gonna swallow you. I opted to imagine it as a sea of thick chocolate! We were above water on our boats, no splash, on top of what seems like solid platform that will never sink us. We thought we'd be afraid. We ended up like children in an amusement park. My thoughts wandered to some scenes in the bible, the robinsons crusoe and what have you. Hands down the best part of this trip.

We caught up with our scheduled mass in town, freshened up and went for the Southern tour of Batan. Southern tour compose of the House of Dakay (oldest house in Batanes), Ruins of Songsong, Alapad rock formation, Marlboro country and Tayid light house. But really there is no definitive destination here. Just look over the window and you are as good as THERE.

We capped our trip with a dinner especially arranged for us by our partner at the lighthouse of Basco. A perfect venue for that final night cap.

Who should go to Batanes?

Those who are willing to shell out a few more pesos to make good a promise to self and finally place a tick mark on that bucket list.

Those who would like to spend sometime just staring out in a picturesque landscape escaping all else that occupies your usual day.

Those who wants to feel they have the luxury of time... and is finally rich with it.

Those who would like to see how life is lived back when our priorities are straight, our lifestyle basic and our trust in others still exist.

Next time... instead of going to that posh hotel that treats you as kings and queens, pay up for fresh air, for noble perspectives, genuine smiles, subject yourself to nature, let it wow and lure you. Next time, opt for bare beauty and learn.

I am glad to have met the people in Batanes, to have laid my hands on their houses, to have exchanged ideas with their elders and their young. I am happy that all in life is not yet spoilt. I am glad to know that Batanes is still pure. I am hoping it will stay the same. I wish that it will not change. But I do hope it changes us...their guests.

Hello again? Where have you been spending your time these days?

I grew up in a family that does not travel together. The first known travel I ever had with my dad, mom and siblings together was when I was about 22 years old when we celebrated my brother's passing in an Engineering licensure exam as a 12th placer together with relatives in Villa Escudero. The pictures of that event is family treasure.

Let's just say I started late. So I have much catching up to do ;)

The easiest and most relaxing way to travel is to hire a travel agent to package things for you.

I already mentioned in a previous post, going on your own is always more full of adventure and to some, may be more meaningful and fulfilling.

However, although this may be ideal, it is not always the way to go.

So you already know a travel agent. ;) What do we want to know so we could give you a spot on holiday.

Budget

In any holiday, it would be futile to think of a place any further than our budget. Expectations are managed and I'd dare say governed by the amount of money we have carefully set aside to go on a holiday. Personally, the after taste of a holiday depends on how I stuck to the budget while I was on the trip.

Do not be afraid to give your budget to your travel agent. This way, we could maximize the available choices for you as we plan the trip. In some cases, your travel agent can also give you a more accurate figure to aim at. Give it some thought. It might put you back on track and make things more "do-able".

The budget determines if you are going to a place reachable by air, sea, land. The budget dictates if you have to go to a posh hotel afforded by your money or happily share a quad room somewhere more rustic. It also sets the limit to the attractions you are to explore in the place.

Time

Most of us work and the leave credits we have gives us the parameters of our get-away. Although you may have the budget for it, you might have to stay nearby or those places where a 3days 2night vacay is already enough.

If you can afford more time though, do make this information available to your travel agent. This way, she or he may be able to give you an idea of nearby places to explore while you are at it. A nearby province may be as interesting as the one you initially thought of. The Baguio-Banawe-Sagada route is one. Cebu-Bohol is another. Not to forget foreign country visits like Singapore-Indonesia-Malaysia route, Thailand-Cambodia-Vietnam route and Beijing-Shanghai route.

Personal Details

Your travel agent will need full names - ALWAYS THE ONES WRITTEN ON YOUR PASSPORT or in local travels, the one written in a goverment issued ID.

Aside from the names, the following information are handy when making bookings with a travel agent:
1. Ages of the people traveling.
2. Birthdays
3. Passport numbers, nationality, validity / expiry of passport
4. Relations (this help in rooming assignments)
5. How many visas you already gotten for yourself (this eases up some requirements when a new visa needs to be secured)
6. Personal capability for the tour: senior citizens, babies, ability to swim, to hike, to take care of self, disability, other limitations.

I'm pretty sure I forgot some. But the list above is often enough.

Personal Goals

Sometimes, the trip is personal. What do you want to achieve? Who do you want to meet? What is the underlying purpose of a travel?

An example is to bond with family, to party, to discover history, to have business connections, to be a kid again. I am pretty sure your travel agent can get you to a place that would meet these goals.

How can we help?

Aside from giving you an idea of a realistic budget, itinerary and aligning your plan based on your personal goals and travel companions, a travel agent also helps you/ assist you to

1. Get a visa.
2. Get airport transfers especially in places unknown to you.
3. Get tickets to attractions before you get there.
4. Connect you with a local tour guide that speaks your language and help you go around.
5. Offer full board packages when applicable.
6. Give you access to hotel promos.
7. Get you access to more difficult avenues to book online like cruises or diving, cooking, concert-themed holidays.
8. And many more.

Some people think they do not know how to go on a trip. Some people think they already know too much.

For both types of people, it does not hurt to get a package off the shelf next time they travel.

The former may find how easy things actually are.

The latter may find, that it is time to delegate the tour guide position to someone else.

Happy days ahead!

Regards,

"Where is your passport? Keep it in a safe place and remember where you put it"

That was a message I sent to one friend packing her things to move houses. Indeed, it is such a small piece of document that can be easily overlooked but it impacts your travel greatly.

A passports is " a document, issued by a national government which certifies the identity and nationality of its holder for the purpose of international travel" according to Wikipedia

I once encountered a client who lost her passport because she left it with a building guard. She used her passport as a regular i.d. to enter the premises. Huge mistake. Handle your passports with care. Keep it in a safe, dry place so as to keep its good condition and to have easy access to it when you need it.

The passport, aside from you ticket is the single most important document you need to travel the world.

Some reminders:

Do not tamper your passports. Only immigration officers, embassy consuls should write on them.

Put it in a jacket when kept. Take it out from its jacket before giving them to the immigration officers at the airport.

Keep them up to date. By rule, your passport should be 6 months valid at the time of your return to your country. This is overlooked a lot of times and the result may lead to disappointment.

In foreign countries you would/ may be required to give your passport upon check-in in your hotel,buying train tickets or when changing currencies. In some communist countries, they may even require you to leave them at the hotel concierge. If you can, do not. In most cases, it is photocopied or scanned.

In booking airline tickets, no matter how you abhor your name and would like to spell it another way, give it to your travel agent as written in the passport. No other name matters when you travel. Insisting that your baptismal certificate is different from the one in the passport won't work. The passport always wins.

How to apply/ renew your passport?

In the Philippines, you should apply for an appointment online through here and bring your requirements listed here . DFA offices in malls that may be near your place would be convenient alternative to the DFA office in Macapagal Ave. Senior Citizens need not make an appointment to renew or apply for their passport.

Xperience Travel Services offer Passport application/ renewal services too.

Applying for a passport is relatively easy. Standing in line for a long period of time is a given but the requirements are pretty straight forward. Special cases such as applying for a child's passport where the parents are both out of country as OFWs (in which case you would need an SPA notarized in the country where you are at among others), or when passports are lost may take more documentation or time but if you are careful to note them, there should be no hassle.

The only hassle would be if you do not have any of the required documents. I sometimes receive calls for passport application from people who do not have valid ids as stated here. I just have to make them understand that requirements are there for a reason. It is to safeguard the possession of such document as a passport. Once issued a passport, you have a valid i.d. of your citizenship forever.

Forgetting passport validity

There are many cases of travelers who overlook the validity date of their passports. Avoid to be placed in this situation but should you be pushed, there are express applications you can use. When all things fail, beg.

What to do when your passport was stolen/ got lost on a trip?

Prevention is always better than cure. During a trip, guard your passport. Do not leave it just anywhere or if needed for presentation, do not let it leave your sight It is always good to have a small bag with you to keep your money and valuable documents during a trip. If you can, leave a photocopy of your passport in one of your bags (every bag if you can) for emergency purposes. Before leaving home, scan a copy of your passport and email yourself your passport or put it in a safe online storage site. If you are the type (like me) who wants nothing left undone, do leave a printed copy to someone who you could contact to fax the document wherever you may need them.

All these preparations would help ease the process of getting a new passport in another country. If this unfortunate thing happens, just go to a consulate/ embassy of your country and they will process a new one for you.

VISA

Your travel history is presented in all the passports you have used in your lifetime. In most cases, when acquiring visa from other countries, they would look into this travel history to get an objective view of how you use your privilege to travel. The more you present, the better. For example, in securing Schengen visa, you are encouraged to give all your issue passports in the past, from the very first. Yes, that's it. Start looking for that passport you had when you first took a glimpse of Disneyland. Hah!

All in all, your passport can take you to places. Take good care of it and make sure that you are always able to go for that holiday without hassle.

Regards,
Dear Traveler,

"If only I am not so forgetful!"

I often get the feeling that I left something important when I pack. I end up putting in too much instead of too little most of the time. Do you also end up doing the same?

I even have pre-holiday nightmares where I am awakened by a dream where I left my ticket and I am already at the airport and the plane is about to leave.

Preparation calms me down.

And so, when preparing for a trip, I pack my bags mentally first. With my tour itinerary on one hand and the weather forecast in the other, I map out my activities for the duration of my travel, picture my room, my dress, my comfort. Then I start listing down everything on paper and fit them on the itinerary I had in mind. If I would like to "go and be surprised" in the location I want to go...I plan out in terms of $$$.

After I list down all I need for the trip,that is when I go to my room and pack them. The list stays with me so that I know I will not forget anything in the hotel when its time to go back.

You see, I was born with the memory of a 70-year old and I need this to keep my sanity. I'd forget my name if my mom did not call me too often.

Some things to consider when packing:

Weather

Should you bring raincoats or sunblock? Is one sweater enough? Do I need thermal clothes? Including lip balm in you kikay kit is superflous in some trips and essential in others. Liquids used to protect your skin should be packed properly and always in your checked-in luggage. Never pack an umbrella in your hand-carried luggages as they will be confiscated at the airport.

Duration of trip

For long trips, try to bring clothes you can wash, dry and use easily. Cash is very important - if not its equivalents in terms of traveler's cheque, atm or a very generous friend.

Activities

Although a packaged tour may already outline your activities, it is still best to go online to check out how others had their trip to certain tourist spots. A simple tip from their experience may enhance yours. Knowing your timeline / schedule may also help you pack efficiently. Example: If you are arriving at the hotel from the airport too early to check in (standard check in time for hotels is at 2:00p.m.) then you should be ready to have a small bag packed inside your big bag so that you'd be ready to leave your luggage at the hotel concierge after checking in your luggage. Not doing so may mean that you'd sort out what you need at the hotel lobby before leaving your luggage.

Baggage allowance for the trip

For airline baggage allowance, try to visit the airline website you are using for certain restrictions. More so if you are traveling long haul with stops using different airlines. For example, travelers flying Philippine Airlines to the U.S. should know that although they may have 50lbs allowance for their baggage, they could only check in "2 pieces-50lbs (23kgs) each piece Total of 107 in (273 cm) for the 2 pieces with no piece exceeding 62 in (158cm)" (from http://www1.philippineairlines.com/flights/all-about-baggage/free-baggage-allowance/travelling-philippine-airlines-and-airphil-express/)

In packaged tours with transfers using sit in coach, only one standard size baggage is allowed as you are sharing storage space with other passengers in the coach. Although there may be provisions for paying your excess baggage, you may still be refused if there are no available space to give. Sometimes it all boils down to being considerate.

Papers, papers, papers

Your passport, your tour itinerary, your airline ticket, concert ticket, printed directions to a destination you checked out on the net (print them preferably in the script using the country's language), map to a nearby church, a letter, an invitation. Never leave your passport in the hotel. In some countries (I was a victim in China) riding the train to the next town may require you to present your passport (as some trains take you to the next town all the way to Shanghai!).

Your tickets. Be sure to read them thoroughly. Mindfully and with full understanding. Some itineraries/ tickets use military time. You might show up in the airport at 1PM when your flight already left 12 hours earlier. It pays to tell someone else your schedule, put them in your phone for alarm so as not to forget.

Technology

What can't you live without? Most probably, cameras and cellphones would fall in this category. Make sure you have your chargers, your memory cards, usb cords with you. Also, a tip may be to bring not only adapator / universal adaptors but also extension cords. Have you ever stayed in hotels where the only other socket aside from the ones behind the t.v. is the one beside the sink?

Dress up

I myself am not a dressy person. I do not feel compelled to dress up. However, when going for a trip, try to DRESS UP. This helps your image at the airport, the way the locals will treat you, and they look good in the pictures - preserving the memory of your trip.

Some months back, a memo was sent to us, travel agents asking us to advise our guests to dress well at the airports especially for travels to Singapore, Bangkok and when traveling long haul. This is because immigration officers end up sizing up the clients and although it seldom happens, questioning their intent for travel. Such disturbances can just spoil a perfectly planned holiday on the onset.

A friend of mine uses this strategy to increase her chances for a seat upgrade. It does not hurt to try.

Hygiene

I need not tell you to bring your toiletries. But one other thing I do is to bring a towellette and shawl or if I can "malong". Being a budget traveler may sometimes mean you need to deal with untidy hotels or if you have very high standards, hotels that may not live up to that. I either use these to put on my pillow, to wrap myself in aside from the blankets, etc.

Medications

This is a personal look out. Do not forget. If you are healthy, at least bring immodium :)

I told you I over pack! :)

However i hope that this helps you. If you are traveling in a group / family, try to share and delegate essentials that are not for personal use. This saves you space.

Having said all these, it is only when you get to your destination will you know what you .....forgot!

Happy traveling!

Regards,

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">I almost did not see Shanghai. It was a good thing I pushed through with the trip. Thank goodness!
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Before visiting Shanghai, I thought China was Beijing and the great wall is the bucket list item to tick. That being dealt with, I did not feel an urge to visit Shanghai. However, due to the many low cost flights to Shanghai bombarding my email, I thought, why not?

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">So I traveled, alone, under our packaged tour of course. I find that in traveling to China, a packaged tour is a must. Safety, language barrier, and simple sanity is eased by doing that tiny little thing of booking a tour.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Shanghai is described by the Lonely Planet as " the most dynamic city in the world's fastest-changing nation".
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">For me, it was China...but not quite. For some of the places I went to I felt I was in Venice, in some I felt like I was in New York, and yet for others, It felt like England.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large; line-height: 16px;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large; line-height: 16px;">It did not feel as restrictive as Beijing and it felt fresh, new and friendlier to tourists. The people dress up well, but when they dress down, you'd see them in their PJs. Surprised to see one in the morning. Much more when I saw several while I was at the grocery one night.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Must see in Shanghai
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
One: The Bund - a stroll in the Bund gives you a bird's eye view of what Shanghai was, is and is becoming.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Frommer's description of this fave activity in Shanghai:
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">The most widely known street in Asia, with its gorgeous colonial buildings that were the banks, hotels, trading firms, and private clubs of foreign taipans (bosses of old Shanghai's trading firms) and adventurers past, deserves to be walked over and over again, especially now that it has been given a US$700-million face-lift. See up close the exquisite architectural details of thePeace Hotel, the Customs House, the former Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, and scores of other buildings, some lavishly restored, others closed and awaiting development. Then head across the street to the Bund Promenade, which has been widened and gussied up with new trees and park benches. Here you can mingle with the masses while admiring the splendor and grandeur of old Shanghai on the one side, and the gleaming promise of new Shanghai on the other side of the river. After you've seen it by day, come back again at night for a different perspective.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Two: Water Villages - be it the famed Zhujiajiao Water Town or the more proximate water villages to Shanghai, you would surely get a glimpse of how the old settlers have conducted their living along the river banks of Shanghai. Tagged as the Venice of the East, Zhujiajiao village dates back to the Yuan Dynasty and was an important market place. Today, I'd have to say, buy your "pasalubong" from here. That's all. The endlines line of stalls along narrow alleyways by the river banks are amazing to see. You could easily get lost in the myriad of commerce that are both tasteful, unique and very Shanghai. Unlike in other market places in town, items seen in this water village are the types you'd love to take as a keepsake of the place. Romantic bridges (36 in all) is the most picturesque feature of the Zhujiajiao Water town. Ride a gondola paddled by locals and you travel back in time.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large; line-height: 16px;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large; line-height: 16px;">Three: Laze around in a coffee shop in Xintiandi. But I would not need to tell you that. The moment you enter this corner of Shanghai, that is exactly what you'd like to do. Come back after the tour and sip coffee, people watch and relax.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Four: Shop. Shanghai has many commercial "gardens" of bazaars and large malls in which to get your shopping fix. one of which is the Yu Yuan Garden Bazaar. Scenery, shops and food. What else can you ask for? Just a short reminder: (just me talking) if you are not an expert in looking at jewelries, ask someone you trust who is before you buy. If you are not a doctor and are not sure of the medicine's effect on your health, think twice before any purchase. As in any tour, you are likely not going to be able to come back to return, complain or follow up on any of your purchases. Be safe.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Weather
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
I came to Shanghai in the fall and it felt just right.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Shanghai has four seasons: Spring is from March to May, Summer is June to September , Autum is from October to November and Winter is from December to February.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large; line-height: 16px;">Food
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Ask anyone and the first food to come out of the fave list is the Xiaolongbao. The dumpling, with flavourful soup within a delicately pinched dumpling wrapper is such a craze in Shanghai. Tourists stand in line to have a taste of this Shanghai snack.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Another one to satisfy your palette are the hairy crabs. If you happen to be in Shanghai while it is in season, do grab a couple of these crustaceans.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
While you are at it, try the noodles sold in the streets for a traditional food fare.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">
Falling for Shanghai
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; line-height: 16px;">Shanghai is a fresh addition to any traveler's list of places to go to. It is not a historic tick down your UNESCO inspired list but it gives you a fresh taste of China.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">

Have you ever asked your self this question?

With the proliferation of websites offering hotel rooms and more so websites that suggest itineraries for "do-it-yourself" vacations, there is much reason for you to think harder which direction to choose.

Traveling on your own is a very enriching experience. Researching the destination and booking your own hotel/ resort would make it personalized and more "within your control". Your own preferences to a T would be followed and you "save" on money because you did it all by yourself without the help of an agency.

If you did your research well, you may be able to go to unbeaten paths that tourist buses may not cover. You would have more time and more intimate connection to your destination because of all the things you'd learn along the way.

Yes, the following statement would come from me, your travel agent - It is much more enriching to go to do-it-yourself vacations.

Having said that, why is it not for every body?

For many reasons.

One because not everybody would have the time to plan out several days itinerary. More so if the destination is unfamiliar and quite distant. Quality research would save you time. Haphazard research on your destination would imply more spending to correct your steps.

Second is experience. Although this is something you'd like to earn in the trip, it pays to learn from others so as to maximize time and minimize mistakes along the way. Hear your travel agent out and let her walk you through the trip even before you step on that foreign land.

Third is because of documentations that may be required for your trip. I for one do not like reading long statements from application forms, waiting in line or waiting to be attended to in a phone call that lasts forever. Your travel agent can do the dirty work for you and assist you in visa processing, scheduling and documentation.

In summary, you could choose either way. It all depends on where you are going and how ready you are to personally attend to the details of your trip. An off the rack travel package may just give you a chance to go on a whim. A do it yourself travel may give you a chance to teach others how to get there next time...without the glitches. :)

When I entered into the travel agency business, the first thing that caught my attention was Filipinos' insatiable liking for Hong Kong. I first travelled to Hong Kong in the year 2002. Quite late considering that many contemporaries then have traveled to Hong Kong much earlier. I thought that I have checked that on my bucket list and that I have already moved on.

What I discovered now is that this little island is STILL our most visited playground. Sans some period of conflict back in 2010, Hong Kong continues to be the leading destination for holidays.

Why is that, i ask?

Four Seasons. Imagine, just an hour away from the Philippines and your winter wonderland is already at hand. Hong Kong has four seasons and can be pretty "wintery" in the months of December all the way to even March. Filipinos are very fond of this weather because we hardly get them especially in urban Metro Manila.

Ever New. Hong Kong continues to attract tourists because it has seriously committed itself to providing something new all the time. Despite the size of this city state, the attraction per square mile could give you quite a number of places to see.

Budget. Yes. You can get to Hong Kong on a budget that is if you are the type who can hold on to your wallet tightly as you pass by the attractive deals along Nathan Road, then you'd likely to succeed. Getting to Hong Kong is comparable to local deals and for some this makes it even more attractive.
